It may lack the skills for fighting against the Isengard forces or holding a meeting about what to do with some annoying Hobbits, but according to rumors a type of tree in Ecuador is walking.
You read it right, there is a very special type of palm tree named Socratea exorrhiza, which can form new roots to move to a better soil. Furthermore, it does not just take small steps. According to Karl Gruber from BBC, these mobile trees can travel almost 20 meters in a year. So, this is the legend, but is it real?
According a thesis written by biologist Gerardo Avalos in the year of 2005, these trees that form new roots occasionally are tightly attached to the soil in a defined area. Forming new roots does not indicate that they are travelling around.
